[1] The mitochondrial F1F0-ATP synthase uses energy derived from a proton gradient to synthesize ATP. The structure of this complex has been referred to as a 'lollipop,' as the soluble F1 catalytic unit is attached to the mitochondrial inner membrane via the F0 unit, which is anchored in the membrane and connected via a stalk structure to the F1 unit.
[2] The catalytic portion of mitochondrial ATP synthase consists of 5 different subunits (alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and epsilon) assembled with a stoichiometry of 3 alpha, 3 beta, and a single representative of the other 3. Three proteins, designated e, f, and g, copurify with the F1F0 subunits, but are peripherally associated with the membrane or the stalk. The functions of these proteins are unknown."
