Gene: [CSN/04q211] caseins; (CSN1 CSN2 CSN10)

SUM

The human caseins include alpha-S1-casein (GEM:04q211/CSN1) and beta-casein (GEM:04q211/CSN2), which are the substrates for protein kinase (see GEM:13q13/CSNK1A1 and GEM:20p13/CSNK2A1) and precipitate in the presence of calcium (so called calcium-sensitive caseins), and kappa-casein (GEM:04q211/CSN10), which prevents the precipitation of the other caseins by calcium through micelle formation in cattle (Ferretti-1990). Fujiwara-1997 demonstrated that in the human the alpha-S1, beta-, and kappa- forms of casein are closely linked and arranged in that order. By FISH, they demonstrated that the casein gene family is located on 4q21.1."
