The endogenous retroviral sequences (ERV) are an integral part of the human genome. Presumably, at some time during the course of human evolution, exogenous progenitors of ERVs inserted themselves into the cells of the germ line, where they have been replicated along with the host's cellular genes. Furthermore, due to their unique genomic structure, ERVs have been subjected to many amplification and transposition events, resulting in a widespread distribution of complete or partial retroviral sequences throughout the human genome. ERV sequences comprise about 1% of the human genome."
