Gene superfamily: flavin containing monooxygenases; (FMO1 FMO3 FMO4 FMO5)

SUM

Flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMO; EC 1.14.13.8) mediate metabolic N-oxidation of the diet-derived trimethylamine. FMO catalyzes the NADPH-dependent N-oxygenation of nitrogen-, sulfur-, and phosphorus-containing drugs, xenobiotics and endogeneous amines, and is implicated in the detoxification and metabolic activation of environmental toxins. Three forms of the enzyme, FMO1 (GEM:01q2/FMO1) found in fetal liver, FMO3 (GEM:01q2/FMO3) found in adult liver, and FMO4 (GEM:01q2/FMO4) also found in adult liver, are encoded by genes clustered in the 1q23-q25 region."
