HGNC Approved Gene Symbol: SPRR3
Cytogenetic location: 1q21.3 Genomic coordinates (GRCh38): 1:153,001,749-153,003,856 (from NCBI)
Proteins of the SPRR family, like SPRR3, are components of the cornified cell envelope, which provides the protective barrier function of stratified squamous epithelial cells (Cabral et al., 2001).
Gibbs et al. (1993) reported that there is a single gene for the SPRR3 subfamily of small proline-rich proteins.
Using RT-PCR, Cabral et al. (2001) detected high SPRR3 expression in human esophagus and cervix, with lower expression in ovary, and no expression in skin and uterus. In cultured human keratinocytes, SPRR3 expression rose following calcium-induced differentiation.
Gibbs et al. (1993) reported that all SPRR genes, including SPRR3, are closely linked within a 300-kb DNA segment on chromosome 1q21-q22.
Using long-distance PCR, Cabral et al. (2001) mapped the SPRR3 gene to the SPRR gene cluster spanning 170 kb of chromosome 1q21.
