The saturation hybridization studies of Hatlen and Attardi (1971) indicated a copy number of tRNA genes of 1,300 for the haploid human genome--an average of 65 gene copies for each tRNA species. These genes tend to be clustered, an arrangement that would facilitate the exchange of sequence information and enable them to evolve together.
Buckland (1989) found that most and perhaps all of the human tRNA(asn) genes map to the same chromosome bands as do the U1 RNA true genes (180680) and class I pseudogenes located on the short (p36.3) and long (q12-q22) arms, respectively, of chromosome 1. Buckland (1989) presented evidence that the U1 RNA gene family and the TRN gene family are closely linked on repeat units (or multiples of units) of 180 kb, probably organized in tandem arrays. Buckland (1989) proposed that a pericentric inversion had split a tandemly repeated gene family into 2 initially identical loci.
