Gene: [07p21/IL6] interleukin 6 (interferon, beta 2); B-cell differentiation factor (interleukin 6); hybridoma growth factor (interleukin 6); [IFNB2 BSF2 ]

SUM

[1] Sehgal-1982 demonstrated that fibroblasts and leukocytes have, in addition to the major beta-interferon mRNA class (0.9 kb; GEM:09p22/IFNB1), several minor classes transcribed from different genes: 1.3 kb (IFNB2 in chromosome 5), 1.8 kb and 0.9 kb (IFNB3 and IFNB5, respectively, in chromosome 2), and 0.65 kb (IFNB4 in chromosome 4). The fraction 1.3 kb (IFNB2) was later found to correspond to the interleukin 6 gene located in chromosome 7p. It was also found that this gene, in contrast to other beta and all alpha interferon genes, contains introns and does not show detectable homology with IFNB1 (with respect to both nucleotide and amino acid sequences). The GEM catalogue took the data into account and adopted the name IL6 for this gene (that is in accord to the HGM catalogues after 1989). It is notable that the data (Sehgal-1982) on the existence of an IL6/IFNB2-like sequence in chromosome 5 were not confirmed nor disproved; it is probable that there is a pseudogene there.
[2] cDNA for the interleukin 6 receptor have been cloned (Yamasaki-1988; MIM:147880) and sequenced; the amino asid sequence of the encoded peptide is also determined."

GEN

The gene length is 3.4 kb.

FAG

Until 1982 it was generally accepted that there is only one coding gene for beta-interferon (GEM:09p22/IFNB1). But Sehgal-1982 demonstrated that, in addition to the major beta-interferon mRNA class
(0.9 kb; GEM:09p22/IFNB1), there are several minor classes transcribed from different genes: 1.3 kb (IFNB2 in chromosome 5), 1.8 kb and 0.9 kb (IFNB3 and IFNB5, respectively, in chromosome 2), and 0.65 kb (IFNB4 in chromosome 4). The fraction 1.3 kb (IFNB2) was later found to correspond to the interleukin 6 gene located in chromosome 7p. It was also found that this gene, in contrast to other beta and all alpha interferon genes, contains introns and does not show detectable homology with IFNB1. The GEM catalogue (as well as the HGM ctalogues), having taken the data into account, adopted the name IL6 for this gene and (in contrast to HGM) reserved the symbol IFNB2 for one of beta-interferon genes in chromosome 5, which were suggested by Sehgal."
