Gene: [17p1/ENO3] enolase 3 (phosphopyruvate hydratase, beta; muscle);

COM

[1] The GDB and HGM catalogues assign the symbol ENO2 to gene of neuronal enolase (and not muscle one, as in preceding edittions of HGM). This was based on the report (Craig-1989) that, in experiments with in situ hybridization on chromosome, cloned cDNA for neuronal enolase is found as a major signal in the region 12p13, where the gene for 'second enolase activity' was previously mapped (see also GEM:12p13/ENO2).
[2] It is interesting that in the same study (Craig-1989) two minor hybridization sites were also found; one was in 1p36, where ENO1 was located, and the other was in 17pt-p12, that is probably accounted for by the use of not quite gene-specific probe (the small segment of the gene coding region contained in 0.7 kb cDNA fragment reveals the most homologous regions of all the three enolase genes)."

FAG

Three enolase isoforms are known: 1 - an alpha peptide homodimer; the corresponding gene is expressed in the majority of tissues and is mapped to chr 1p (GEM:01p36/ENO1); 2 - the given isoform; its expression is restricted to skeletel muscle and smooth muscle cells; and 3 - a gamma peptide homodimer; its gene is expressed only in neurons and cells of the neuroendocrine system and is mapped to chr 12p (GEM:12p13/ENO2)."
